holiday on a farm

Holidays on the farm around Lake Wolfgang.

The area around Lake Wolfgang has been characterized by agriculture since time immemorial. A stable climate ensures fertile soils that are just as suitable for arable farming as they are for grazing animals. The high alpine pastures, where the ground is stony and the slopes are steep, are almost exclusively reserved for animals: cattle (and sometimes also goats) spend most of the summer in the open air as part of natural, extensive agriculture.
And in the valleys, too, the cattle enjoy freedom, which is a pleasant contrast to industrial factory farming.

How can such a "gentle" form of agriculture even succeed - when nowadays a single farmer statistically has to feed over 100 people through his work? Around 1950 there were still 430,000 farms in Austria, on which around a third of the working population was employed. Today there are only 170,000, the percentage of farmers in the workforce has fallen to four percent. (see Buchgraber, p. 6)

Can anyone survive who is so persistent in opposing the supposed zeitgeist?

Well - on the one hand there are more and more people who rely on quality instead of quantity when buying and consuming groceries; who want to live and enjoy consciously and are willing to spend a little more for it. On the other hand, the growing tourism has been able to partially absorb the income that has broken off from agriculture. Holidays on the farm have long been popular with the “townspeople” - but due to the increased stress of everyday life due to new forms of communication and constant availability, more and more people are longing to simply switch off. On farms like the Fischergut you will find exactly the peace and quiet you need.

Everything comes together on a farm holiday - relaxation meets enjoyment and is supplemented by experience and knowledge: How is high-quality food produced, how do the animals that provide it live and how does the “farm ecosystem” actually work?

Animals are part of life on land.

One of the nicest things about a vacation on the farm - especially for children - is certainly the many animals. Cats, dogs, rabbits and rabbits: For those who cannot keep pets in the narrow city apartment, the "little critters you can touch" are something very special.

The large farm animals, especially cattle and pigs, goats and sheep, are no less interesting. They don't cuddle up so well, but they form an essential basis for everyone's life, whether as a consumer or as a producer.

The close coexistence of humans and animals is what defines the farm. This togetherness gives rise to countless exciting stories that want to be discovered and experienced; Stories that can help raise awareness of nutrition, nature and the environment.

Cuddling allowed!
For the farmers, of course, the big livestock is in the foreground, as this is how they earn their livelihood. But a farm is not only populated by cattle and pigs, but - to the delight of young and old - also by numerous animal species that are far better suited to touch. Bunnies and rabbits, dogs and cats: of course, they are also part of the fishermen's estate and ensure that the petting sessions are not neglected.

And although they are no longer needed to do heavy work, horses are still in the stables on numerous farms. When they're not enjoying the country life, look forward to showing visitors the beauty of the landscape from their backs!

Family vacation on the Austrian farm.

Accommodation in private rooms, holiday flats or holiday homes on the farm is a type of holiday that appeals to families with children in particular. The holidaymakers' children can "experience" life on the farm themselves and move around freely. The contact with the animals on the farm is of particular educational importance.

You will get to know the natural life in the country and the change of the seasons. The active experience of farm work on the farm, the harvest time and leisure activities in nature are a new experience, especially for children.

The adult guests appreciate the tranquility and relaxation of the accommodation on the farm. The nature-oriented vacation in the fresh air, the enjoyment of the food from the farm's own production in the sense of a "transparent food production" and the comfortable accommodation are rated positively.

According to a survey, holidays on the farm are particularly appealing to the 30-49 age group. With a share of 60 percent high school diploma and 20 percent university degree, the guests of “Urlaub am Bauernhof” have an above-average level of education.
